ellagic acid

Potent polyphenol antioxidant compound found in pomegranate and most berries. Research has shown that, like many other antioxidants, it can help reduce the signs of sun damage, including the preservation of collagen when skin is exposed to UVB light. There is also limited research showing that (again, like many other plant extracts) ellagic acid can interrupt the process that causes excess melanin formation in skin (Sources: Experimental Dermatology, August 2010, pages 182–190; Journal of Cosmetic Science, May-June 2010, pages 211-224; and International Journal of Cosmetic Science, August 2000, pages 291–303).
