Ingredient Analysis
1. cleansing/lathering OR emulsifying agents ( Steareth-2 ) depending on the product, this ingredient cleanses; emulsifies; lathers; makes products foamy/creamy & spread better
2. glyceryl stearate SE ( Glyceryl Stearate ) self-emulsifying emollient & thickening agent, the higher up an ingredient list it is, the thicker the formula
3. Anionic Surfactants ( Sodium Laureth Sulfate ) Used as surfactants & emulsifiers in cleansers & can be irritating to the skin, depending on alkalinity, some are very gentle. It's important to remember though, that just because a cleanser has sulfates in it doesn't mean it'll be drying and irritating. Take note of the other ingredients in the product (like anti-irritants, emollients, moisturizers) and where on the ingredient list the sulfate surfactant is listed. 4. licorice extract ( Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate ) anti-inflammatory; anti-allergic; the root has been proven to treat hyperpigmentation so its used in whitening products
5. buffering agent ( Sodium Hydroxide ) a buffering agent (stabilizes pH)
6. Caprylyl Glycol. An alcohol, derived from a plant which is used as an emollient and coconut derived preservative.
7. Butylene Glycol. solvent; penetration enhancer; humectant moisturizer; in cleansing creams it dissolves dirt, avoids the product from drying too quickly during the removal stage & helps formulas spread better
8. fatty alcohols ( Cetyl Alcohol,Stearyl Alcohol ) coconut-derived emollient moisturizer, emulsifies & stabilizes emulsions; thickeners; carrying agents; slightly waxy texture
9. evodia extract ( Evodia Rutaecarpa ) anti-inflammatory effects
10. Disodium Edta. preservative & product stabilizer; helps the topical penetration of active ingredients; chelating agent
11. Chlorphenesin. Chlorphenesin is used in skincare and cosmetics as a/an antimicrobial, preservative ingredient.
12. Hexanediol. Hexanediol is used in skincare and cosmetics as a/an solvent to dissolve things in a formula ingredient.
13. preservatives ( Bht,Phenoxyethanol ) Used as a preservative or enhances the efficacy of preservatives
14. Amino Acids ( Arginine ) Widely used in moisturizers and emollients because they are thought to help penetrate the skin; have water-binding, antioxidant and wound-healing abilities
15. Lactic Acid. the most moisturizing of AHAs; whitening astringent; exfoliant
16. Sodium Pca. Humectant moisturizer
17. Petrolatum. An occlusive protective moisturizer; great when used to seal in a humectant moisturizer
18. Bisabolol. anti-irritant; reduces dry & damaged skin flaking; restores suppleness; also a fragrance. It also increases the skin penetration of other cosmetic ingredients.
19. Allantoin. considered an effective anti-irritant; an occlusive that temporarily helps protect from chapped skin or windburn damage; softens skin & exfoliates; also a preservative
20. thickener ( Xanthan Gum ) thickens/stabilizes the product; generally, the more thickening agents used in formulating a cream, for example, may enhance its stability, but can also cause difficulty in spreading.
21. fragrance ( Farnesol ) Fragrance in skin care is like spraying perfume on your face. Smells nice, but potentially irritating and damaging to your skin's acid mantle. Especially if these ingredients are high up on the ingredient list.
22. solvents ( Aqua,Water ) solvent
23. Glycerin. A humectant moisturizer; usually used as a base in (light) moisturizers
