Research shows this potent antioxidant helps improve blood flow. It is often used in anti-cellulite products because of its relation to circulation. However, there is no research showing that improved circulation affects cellulite.
Applied topically, ginkgo leaf is a good antioxidant due to it being a rich source of flavonoids. These work to prevent cell membrane peroxidation, which is a source of damage that can lead to increased signs of inflammation and aging. This plant extract also has some antibacterial and antifungal effects.
Other research has shown that ginkgo leaf can help protect skin from redness and inflammation during exposure to UVA/UVB light in a lab setting. Ginkgo leaf also seems capable of increasing skin’s moisture content and reducing factors in skin that lead to inflammation.
Ginkgo includes flavonos such as kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin; Flavones, including luteolin and tricetin; Biflavones, mainly bilobetin, ginkgetin, isoginkgetin and sciadopitysin, catechins, proanthocyanidins; Sterols and 6-hydroxykynurenic acid.
