Type of “friendly” bacteria found in the intestine that helps maintain a healthy natural flora in the large intestine by creating an environment that prevents potentially harmful bacteria from growing. Its benefit for skin seems to stem from its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity when applied in concentrations of 5% or more (Source: Journal of Cosmetic Science, November-December 2012, pages 385-394), though such research comes from the Lauder companies, who sell products containing this ingredient. Despite this, lactobacillus is considered a good probiotic ingredient that holds promise for reducing inflammatory skin disorders such as acne and eczema.

Dermatologists give a nod of approval for probiotic skincare but admit that further study is needed to warrant the hype.
